The Elements and Our Affinity with them
Some people believe that humans have an affinity or a greater affinity
with one or two elements over the other elements. For example, some
people like the rain (water element) or wind (air element) more than
say, lightning (fire element). I know someone who is partial to thunder
(sound waves = air), lightning and rain ... I also know someone who's
aware that he is partial to just the wind, period.
Ah well ..., likes and dislikes aside, from the astrological viewpoint,
it's best to have a chart with all the elements balanced. People with
balanced elements have a better chance to withstand the challenges that
come with the vagaries of the governing vibes that rule each and every year.
In this light, those of you who are lacking in certain elements would
be well advised to "prop yourselves up" as it were, with the missing
elements by way of surrounding yourselves with the missing elements in
the form of say, choice gemstones or semi-precious stones (for those
lacking in the earth and fire elements), fish tanks or living by bodies
of water (for those lacking in the water element), jewelry or metal
containers (for those missing the metal element) and taking up gardening
or having plants about the home or even wearing wooden beads (for those
missing the earth and wood elements). Use your imagination here people! :>
A fundamental part of Chinese Astrology is about the interrelationship
of the five basic elements -- Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. In
Western Astrology, it's Water, Fire, Earth and Air. I wonder about
this difference sometimes ... I mean, if Astrology is a science-art,
shouldn't the fundamentals be constant?
In any case, since metal (as in vessels) traps water, and since metal
will change into liquid when heated, that suggests that the elements
are truly interrelated, doesn't it?
What more when we consider that the rain and the dew contribute to plant
life producing the wood element in the process!
Fire is produced by burning wood ... fire is also generated by rubbing
together two pieces of wood ... need I say more?
The entire universe, we are told, is composed of these five elements.
Again, I repeat them for those who are confused by the slight difference
between Chinese and Western Astrology elements. The five elements we
speak of that compose the entire universe are:
- Metal
- Water
- Wood
- Fire and
- Earth
These elements are interdependent and are each controlled by another.
- Metal is controlled by Fire
- Fire is controlled by Water
- Water is controlled by Earth
- Earth is controlled by Wood
- Wood is controlled by Metal
In this light, no one element is strongest or weakest. Like the Yin
and Yang, they are interdependent and in a very real sense, are equal.
Each has its place and function.
The element of your lunar sign, the year of your birth, as well as the
time, month and country of birth, will have an influence on your life.
In the birth chart, there is a series of five elements that will have
the following descending order of influence:
1. The element of the year of birth
2. The element of your animal sign
3. The element of the hour of birth
4. The element of the month of birth
5. The element of the country of birth
The presence of the elements in our charts can be used to help us in our
decisions as to our careers and other activities ... even to the extent
of helping us choose our friends and partners. People who lack certain
elements should ideally pick associates and partners with an abundance
of that/those missing element/s. Such matches augur well for the
relationships, more so if the affinities are good ones.
