Trepanation, more commonly known as "bone setting," is not the
"quick-fix" way to enlightenment as many people will try to
convince you to believe.
You're right, there is no quick way to Enlightenment (or any
other spiritual goal) at all.
Trepanation in fact does heavily involve the Pineal gland,
the venerated point of the physical body which is activated
when the greatest (although some do _not_think this is the final,)
level of spirituality is attained.
The gland will only be stimulated in removing a portion of
the skull, since it is located in the brain itself and cannot
(without advanced technology) be stimulated to such a complete
level as through a more traditional and true method of awakening.
If people want to put pressure on the gland, Yoga has several
such methods.
Physically attempting to activate the gland however, by bone
setting or some other extreme method unaccompanied with the
proper spiritual practices can lead to devastating results.
The gland and the brain's mechanics in their entirety are _not_
treasure chests of holy enlightenment waiting to be opened up
by the crafty explorer.
If this energy is released in an untimely fashion when the
spiritual level of the individual is not ready to receive it,
their faults and shortcomings will be greatly magnified and
brought further out of their control.
Satanists use trepanation on their disciples in different levels
to either control their mind or enhance their ability for evil.
Tibetan Buddhism will use it only on the disciples whom they
have carefully selected as ready and able to receive the power
it grants (I hope it does, and that corrupt Buddhist leaders
do not do otherwise.)
You can find information for this scattered on the internet,
but rarely in books.
In any event, bone setting is not necessary and I would strongly
advise against it.
Meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi, Qabbalah (which you should not be
studying until you are a certain age), or whatever other
organized forms of mysticism you want to undertake, will either
literally or indirectly stimulate the pineal gland at the
_proper_ time.
