The Physically Challenged and Karma
Feb. 5, 1999
Glen Hoddle, England's football coach during the last World Cup, got
into trouble when he was quoted as having shared his belief that
disabilities may be the result of sins in a previous existence. Some
reports say Glen "insists he had been misinterpreted"; other reports
say he has accepted he made "an error of judgement" and has apologized.
Nevertheless, it was widely reported that that reported remark sparked
a wave of fury in England resulting in his dismissal as England's
football coach.
The English FA decided that Hoddle's position was "untenable" since he
had "tainted the whole image of the game". The English FA reportedly
said: "The past few days have been painful for everyone involved but it
is nothing compared to any offence that may have been caused to disabled
people in our community."
Disabled groups, the Prime Minister Tony Blair and Sports Minister Tony
Banks all joined to condemn his remarks. Hmm ..., this reminds me that
people who dare make a stand somehow have to pay the courageous price
for their personal convictions. In this case, Glen Hoddle was said to
have made controversial comments about the disabled or "physically
challenged".
I am concerned for Hoddle ... concerned for the disabled ... and concerned
for all who are pained by this episode. Not that I can do anything to
alleviate the pain although I would like to contribute to the healing
process by saying that this reincarnation and karma theory - that we have
to pay our karmic dues - shouldn't hurt people, if anything it should help
make us feel better about our lot in life.
I myself have found comfort and consolation in believing that the trials
and tribulations I am confronted with have to do with past lives' actions
leading to this life's karmic reaction. I know and know of many people
(famous and not famous) who find meaning and strength in this belief as
well. This theory isn't about "victimization" as much as about
"self-empowerment". Another positive outcome of believing in this theory
is that when one believes in this theory, one sets out to be a do-gooder.
We believe that we cover all the bases, so to speak, when we do good.
The act of helping another squares off a karmic debt if one owes a debt.
The act of helping another also creates good karma if you don't owe a
debt and this is like 'credited' (for want of a better word) into a
Spiritual Bank. As far as I'm concerned, everyone has a motive and an
agenda for taking an action and there can be no motive more sincere than
that by helping others we believe we are ultimately helping ourselves.
There are good motives and there are bad motives ... wanting to attain a
state of Divinity is also a motive but it is a pure and good motive ...
one which makes winners of everybody.
We are ALL challenged ... some are physically challenged, others are
emotionally, mentally or spiritually challenged. And those of us who
believe in past lives believe that we are today the sum total of all we
have been. We just have to face our challenges bravely while recognizing
that even if we can't erase past lives' actions, we *can* do our best to
not repeat past lives' (and even this life's) mistakes ... we can and
should break the patterns that sap our souls (ours and those who share
our karmas) ... we can learn our lessons and move on ... we can improve
and develop ... we can GROW. (Growth can be chaotic however and we have
to remember to set some time aside to "weed" our gardens.)
Some mornings I wake up in a near panic wondering if I'm doing the best
that I can for this lifetime. I remind myself that if I don't complete
my soul's work this time around that there's always the next lifetime,
and the next and the next ... I am somehow comforted by this belief that
I shall have as many lifetimes as I shall need to get everything right.
This is what is meant by the metaphysical theory that eventually we shall
all get to the Divinity Point and merge with the Divine.
If you're confused why your parent/s isn't/aren't good to you ...
isn't/aren't there for you ... maybe is/are even destructive to you ...
don't be confused any longer.
If you're confused why your sibling/s isn't/aren't good to you ...
isn't/aren't there for you ... maybe is/are even destructive to you ...
don't be confused any longer.
If you're confused why you love and sympathize with one or some of your
children more than the others, don't be confused any longer.
If you're confused why you care more for some people (especially those
who are seemingly less deserving of your affections and favors) and less
for others (who appear more deserving), don't be confused any longer.
If you're confused why your teachers/peers/acquaintances/associates/
spouses/partners/companions and/or other extended kinfolk aren't there
for you ... are maybe even destructive to you ... don't be confused any
longer.
"Heaven luck" or Karma aside, sometimes our present personality and
character flaws invite undesirable reaction or responses from others.
This is the "Man Luck" factor. This is what we have control over. DO
something about that selfish, self-centered streak; stop disappointing
others; stop creating trouble; stop hurting and harming; enough already
with that sloppiness and/or other disharmonious behavior!
Get a hold of yourselves people and take charge of your karmas!
